| 简介: | Tariffs can reduce the targeted country's exports even to destinations that impose no new barriers. Using Chinese customs data, we find that anti-dumping investigations against Chinese products depress their exports to third markets, mainly through reduced firm entry. We explain this export contraction by extending the workhorse model of Melitz (2003) with interdependent pre-entry investment and variable-markup demand. Simple sufficient-statistics formulas characterize entry and exporter responses, revealing how entry interdependence transmits tariff shocks across markets. We calibrate the model to match tariff responses in both focal and third markets and show that entry interdependence substantially shapes tariff incidence across destinations. |
